DSDN 101-Final stop motion
Final stop motion from Megan van der Poel on Vimeo.
This is my final stop motion. As you can see it has been changed slightly since the last upload where it now has the sketches put in. I also decided to cut out some of the beginning because I felt it was unncessarily long and that part of the clip wasn't adding to the overall look. I have also put some music to it which I found on sound cloud.
DSDN 101-A new way of seeing
A new way of seeing from Megan van der Poel on Vimeo.
Short clip of how I am displaying 'a new way of seeing.' I have chosen to use this font as it gives a sketched look which is an important aspect of my stop motion as I am trying to get people to see the world through an industruial designers eyes.
DSDN 101-Sketch
This is how I am portraying the sketched aspects of my stop motion clip. Along with this chair I wil also have a rubbish bin, drinking fountain and the wind wand in sketched form.
DSDN 101-New location
This is my new stop motion and has the general idea of what what final is going to look like. I like the new location a lot better as it is aesthetically pleasing and still relates to industrial design. Obviously more editing is to be done. Where the camera focuses in on objects such as the chair, rubbish bin, water fountain and wind wand they will turn into a sketch which is what I am now working on.
DSDN 101-Interim
This is my stop motion video to date. After the presentation and feedback gained from tutors I have decided to changed the location of my stop motion to somewhere more inspiring. The location that I have chosen is the new plymouth foreshore, in particular the wind wand. I chose this location as I believe it has incredible industrial design features which will make for a good setting for my stop motion.
DSDN 101-300 word standpoint
Industrial design is everywhere, everything.
The
graphic designer Paul Rand once said that ‘everything is design. Everything!’
What
he meant by this was that every object that a person comes into contact with
has some sort of design process behind it. At one stage all objects were just
an idea that someone had, a problem that was in need of a solution or a product
that had the ability to be advanced. From this original idea an industrial designer
has followed a process to create products with enhanced form, aesthetics,
usability and/or ergonomics; products that we often take for granted. When
living our day-to-day lives it can be easy to overlook this concept, overlook
the fact that everything once started out as just being an idea. Take and alarm
clock or a remote, when using these objects we do not think about the design
process behind them, we only see it for what we gain from it. An alarm clock is
to wake us up; a remote is to turn on the television.
This
concept of seeing products for the design behind them is what I believe needs
to be highlighted, in order to get people to appreciate the products that they
use everyday without a second thought. My stop motion will show everyday
products such as a bench, rubbish bin, water fountain and the wind wand and
turn them into sketched forms to represent the design process behind them. This
will encourage viewers to look at objects through the eyes of an industrial
designer and appreciate the thought process behind them. In doing this they
will be gaining ‘a new way of seeing.’
DSDN 101-3-5 second stop motion test
f
A test stop motion just to get a feel for it. My actual stop motion is going to differ from this however will have the same seeing the day through a persons eyes feels.

DSDN 101: The Clip-Individual Brainstorm/Development
'A new way of seeing'
'Everything is design. Everything!' -Paul Rand
- Design is everywhere. Every object a person sees was designed by someone who was thing about its form, aesthetics, usability, ergonomics, marketing, brand development and sales.
Portrayal
- In order to portray the idea that design is every my stop-motion clip will be a collection of photographs being filmed from the viewpoint of a person and they go through a day.
- As they see everyday objects they become sketches representing the fact that at some stage this object was just a design.
- Thus, in knowledge of this, the person now has 'a new way of seeing.' They are looking at the world through the eyes of an industrial designer.
This is the link of a stop motion clip that i found inspiring as it relates to my concept of filming someone as they go about their day. It also used photography of real life and not animations which is also what i plan on doing. Although this is from the view of someone looking down at their feet it is still relevant to my idea.

Storyboards-One Word Film
I decided to keep my storyboards very simple and clean to make them easy to read and interpret. The boxes are large as I wanted to convey my film mainly through pictures
Storyboard 1: Crash
Storyboard 2: Orbit
Storyboard 3: Race
The concept which i have decided to develop and make into a film is crash. I feel that it has a good narrative quality to it which will engage the audience. I also think it could really be enhanced with the use of sound to give a memorable film.
Brainstorms-One Word Film
These are my first thoughts and words that came to mind when discussing the project as a group. They show general ideas of how i could portray the words.
I then chose the 9 best ideas from my brainstorms and developed them into concepts.
Tornado- Tornado is a good concept as it has a strong action that could be portrayed easily. However making the actual tornado out of the word would be finnicky and difficult to portray the movement successfully.
Crash- Again, another strong action. This concept is good because it has a story to it, making the flash video engaging for the viewer.
Orbit- Ideal concept because it is not an obvious choice of word. Also the concept is simple yet effective and interesting.
Focus-Having a blurred unreadable start would build up tension as the audience tries to figure out what the word is. Very simple idea that would need to be further developed to make an interesting video.
Zoom- This is a direct interpretation of the word zoom meaning it would have a very short video. Very simple concept that the audience would be able to understand very easily.
Bounce- Simple yet elegant design where the 'o' in bounce is a ball that bounces across the stage before finding its place. This is effective as it portrays the meaning of bounce quickly and clearly.
Race-Another good concept as it has more of a story and the individual letters have been given characters which engages the audience and holds their attention.
Jump- Meaning of jump is easy to show through the jumping of each individual letter. Very simple and not that attention grabbing.
Tetris-This is a good concept because the audience can relate to it as most people have played tetris. Simple, yet interesting design that could be easily made into an effective video.
The three concepts I feel are the strongest are crash, orbit and race which I will now storyboard. I chose these three concepts as, when put into flash, they will make interesting videos that will engage the audience whilst clearly showing the meaning of the word through the actions of the individual letters.
Kerning exercise
This exercise taught us about kerning which is the spacing between letters. Kerning is important to consider as it makes word more readable and visually appealing. This is what we were trying to achieve in this exercise where some letters are purposefully placed closer together to create a balance of space between letters.

Individual work

| Isometric drawing of camera |
I chose to use an isometric design style for my individual
drawing as it gives a simple and holistic view of the object. I also chose it
because it is regularly used in the design field as it clearly portrays three-dimensional
objects in two dimensions. It also has merits due to the fact that it portrays
ideas quickly and effectively because it has three views and also gives
relative dimensions of the object.
